SEA and WATER : short sea and waterways solutions

planning

Government is responsible for policy that promotes alternatives to road transport. Given that many UK waterways have enormous capacity for freight, utilising water to transport more goods might significantly contribute to reducing the increase of heavy goods vehicles on our roads.

In 2004, the DfT and DEFRA published a Best Practice quide which is aimed at waterway users and planners. It explains the planning process to those who use the waterways and encourages planners to think about the impact of their decisions on water freight. The guide provides practical advice and includes case studies.
